General
Health- Vitamin defencies result in poor health and make bird succeptable
to sickness. Feeding your bird a proper mix of seed, pellet, fresh fruit, fresh
vagies, vitamin enhanced treats and supplements will ensure your birds nutritional
needs are met. Inspect your bird daily for signs of sickness or other problems.
Any change in eating habits or behavior should be watched carefully. Not eating,
feather pulling, discharge from the beak, eyes, or nostrils, swollen eyes or
labored/fast breathing may be an indication that your bird is sick. Contact
your veterinarian if symptoms persist or get worse.
Cleanliness- Maintaining a clean cage and play area with plenty
of food and water is essential to your birds health. Clean your bird's cage
on a regular basis, disinfect food and water bowls, toys and anything else the
bird may come in contact with. Use a bird bath spray or provide your bird with
water to cleaning itself.
Exercise- All birds need to have room to exercise and burn
off energy or they may resort to nervous behavior such as feather plucking or
destructive chewing. Allow your bird to spend time out of its cage on a daily
basis providing a seperate play area such as a seperate stand or cage top playground.
Toys encourage climbing and chewing which provide stimulating activity, keeping
muscles toned and beaks and claws in shape. Handle your bird daily to keep the
bird socialized and friendly.
Bird Care Tips
- Replenish seed, replace fresh food, and refill fresh water every
day.
- Regularly add fresh fruits, vegetables and greens to your bird's diet. These
can be chopped and mixed with the egg food or scattered over the top of the
seed.
- Use multiple layers of paper to line cage bottom. Remove soiled top sheet
as needed.
- Wood shavings can be used to line the cage as long as there is a wire grid
separating your bird from the litter. Scoop out and discard soiled litter.
- Your bird's cage should be placed in a room where the bird will be exposed
to family activity, but away from drafts and direct sunlight.
- If you plan to take your bird out of the cage, have the wings clipped by a
pet professional. This will need to be repeated after each molt.
- Carefully supervise other pets and small children that are around your bird.
- Do not use "non-stick" cookware. Fumes from overheated cookware
are toxic to your bird!
- Offer several perches of varying diameters to exercise your bird's feet.
- Always ask a pet care professional if you have specific questions or concerns
regarding the health or care of your bird.
